Ahab The Divinity of Oceans mp3
Not unlike a baleful Leviathan, Ahab's latest album, "The Divinity of Oceans", emerges from the obscure ocean depths to provide an impressive account of the Essex and its condemned crew.
Offering a kaleidoscope of human emotions that find tragic conclusion within deep despair and cannibalism, the terrible events are told within the perfect, though dark and disturbing confines of slow doom metal, brutal vocals, and melodic interludes.
Markus Stock (Empyrium, The Vision Bleak) of Klangschmiede Studio E gives "The Divinity of Oceans" its finishing touch. With this latest offering, AHAB have managed to more than outdo their debut release, delivering a masterpiece of Nautic Funeral Doom Metal.

Evergreen Terrace Almost Home mp3
2009 album from the Hardcore outfit. Hailing from Jacksonville, FL Evergreen Terrace has been blazing their own path through the melodic Hardcore style for over a decade now. Anchored by guitar player/vocalist Craig Chaney's clean singing and catchy hooks, punctuated by lead singer Andrew Carey's vicious screamed vocals, the band never depended on anyone but themselves to push their band forward.
With their blistering combination of melodic Hardcore, Metal and Punk Rock strains, Evergreen Terrace has toured the world with bands like As I Lay Dying, Rise Against, August Burns Red, Hatebreed, Thursday, Circa Survive, Everytime I Die, Strung Out, Agnostic Front and many more. They have also been apart of Sounds of the Underground, Vans Warped Tour and Soundwave Festivals.

Cymbals Eat Guitars Why There Are Mountains mp3
Excellent debut by this young group of alt-indie rockers. Sounds remind you of a cross between early Pavement with a mix of early Modest Mouse and their own blend of original songs, lyrics and other instruments leave you wanting more than the nine songs on this album. As 2009 looks to be a great year for music, this one is already near the top. I look forward to seeing them live.

Dead Can Dance The Serpent'S Egg mp3
I do not own many CDs, and mostly because I never seem to find music I truly enjoy or even appreciate. Dead Can Dance has released many albums, but this one is something so different. "Aion" and "The Serpent's Egg" are the most treasured by me.
After that, Dead Can Dance have seemed to drift off to other realms and cultures. I find that "The Serpent's Egg" has a deep element of fear and sorrow. A serious maturity! Lisa Gerrard and Brendan are at their most developed musically and lyrically. I am in love with "The Writing on my Father's Hand". I have never heard such a BEAUTIFUL, ELEGANT, POIGNANT piece in my whole life. Lisa, you are very lucky to have such a gorgeous voice and to be able to share it with the whole world. I also love mystical "Orbis De Ignis" with Brendan.
Brendan has an artful way of representing his song called "Ullyses". His imagination and yearning to sing of old tales that were told throughout the world is so admirable. When I listen to Dead Can Dance I hear a sincere desire to open the hidden doors of religions and myths. Dead Can Dance has been searching and searching all over and everywhere! Maybe they have found what they are looking for, because I know I have found a treasure that's sunk beneath tides and waves. I LOVE this album "The Serpent's Egg"!

The Gates of Slumber Hymns Of Blood And Thunder mp3
From the outset, The Gates of Slumber’s goal has been to take a sledgehammer to the original riffs of their influences like Black Sabbath and Saint Vitus.
Numerous albums, demos and compilation appearances built the Indianapolis trio a strong following in Europe over this decade. It wasn’t until last year that their third full-length, Conqueror, served as their first domestic release. It earned critical acclaim, landing on year-end best-of lists from the likes of Decibel magazine and The Village Voice.
Now The Gates of Slumber are poised to capitalize on that success with Hymns of Blood & Thunder. Out Sept. 29 on Lee Dorrian’s Rise Above Records, it takes this band’s hellhound sound to logical new heights.
The disc was recorded in full analog by Sanford Parker. It has the chasmal production values you’d expect from him. The rhythm section of bassist Jason McCash and drummer “Iron” Bob Fouts resounds with thundering precision more than ever. And the blackened, sorrowful soul that frontman Karl Simon exudes from both his voice and guitar is even more pronounced.
That’s especially the case on the lonesome, bastardized blues of tracks like “Descent Into Madness.” It blends perfectly with the lumbering ferocity of opener “Chaos Calling” and “Death Dealer”’s sinewy gallop, all of which never lose their penchant for melody. Even mood pieces like “Age of Sorrow” and the creepy chants of “The Mist in the Mourning” serve to accentuate the rest of the album’s battering-ram effect.
Those looking for calculus-level measures and abrupt time changes — along with other scene evolutions — won’t find it here. Hymns of Blood & Thunder belongs in a time capsule. It’s heavy metal in its purest form, before it split into a hundred sub-genres. It formidably proves these viking-looking dudes know what made people bang their heads and throw horn signs in the first place.

Push Play Found mp3
Push Play never ceases to amaze me. I have been a fan since early 2007, and when I got their first CD, I thought they were amazing. But after hearing this CD, I love them even more. The music is amazing. The vocals are amazing. The lyrics are amazing. I would recommend them to absolutely anyone. If you haven't heard them, you are missing out on a lot! Push Play is an absolute amazing band, and I love them.

Madness The Liberty Of Norton Folgate mp3
Despite being enamored with ska s Jamaican skank, Madness never forgot their working-class British roots. And the band s first album of new material in a decade owes a greater debt to the Kinks than to Prince Buster. London landmarks (the Hippodrome, Marks & Spencer) add sharp details to memories of a soured relationship on the piano-and-organ-led ''Sugar and Spice.'' The similarly wistful ''Forever Young'' weaves horn lines over minor-key piano plaints and a loping backbeat. It all looks backward unabashedly -- fitting for a band formed 30-plus years ago -- but no less resonant.

Leaves Eyes My Destiny mp3
This EP opens with the heavy, bombastic single "My Destiny," the first taste of Leaves' Eyes' upcoming third studio album, Njord. This song is the highlight of the EP, bringing together lead singer Liv Kristine with supporting grunter/growler Alexander Krull in the beautifully melodic and amazingly atmospheric symphonic metal sound of Leaves' Eyes.
The EP quickly moves into more gorgeous, haunting symphonic metal steeped in Norwegian viking traditions and myth. "Northbound" is another highlight of the EP, it has a stronger sound than many of the other songs and is also from the album.
Aside from the songs taken directly from Njord, however, the other tracks just aren't as strong or feel like they are leftovers from previous Leaves' Eyes releases. "The Battle of Maldon" sounds much like "Farewell Proud Men" from Vinland Saga and any other song that had any kind of backing undertones about Viking battles, but doesn't quite have the same punch. "Nine Waves Maidens" is a gorgeous, new age-like song that pulls on a collection of traditional instruments, which gives the song a more mystical feel, yet still reminds me of "Lovelorn," "Lyset" and other, previous Leaves' Eyes songs. While these songs fit perfectly with the established band mythology and the other songs on the EP, they can sometimes feel a little recycled.
The only song that doesn't seem to fit here is "Scarborough Fair" (Acoustic Version). Not only is it the only song on the EP that doesn't have any depth, Liv's voice just doesn't quite do the ballad justice. Perhaps I feel this way because there are so many other covers of this ballad out there (my personal favorite is the Sarah Brightman version), but the vocals and the music here feel a little disconnected at points and Liv even sounds like she's straining with some of the notes, as opposed to the rest of the band's musical, where she sounds flawless.
While the song features a very original take on the English ballad, it just doesn't quite work for me.
Also, much like previous Leaves' Eyes releases, the mixing feels a little off, primarily becomes Liv's high-pitched, gorgeous soprano voice sometimes gets lost amid all of the wild, loud metal that dominates much of these songs. However, I was somewhat surprised at the lack of Alexander's grunts/growls. He only makes appearances in the title track and in "The Battle of Maldon." In "My Destiny" his role is fairly small and he even has a few lines where he actually sings (be it, in a deep, gravelly voice) instead of growls. I personally enjoyed this change of pace for him. Alexander has an fascinating singing voice, and I hope to see it utilized more on the upcoming album.
While all of the music on My Destiny is everything fans have come to expect from Leaves' Eyes -atmospheric, melodic metal laced with Liv's beautiful voice, sweeping choirs, epic symphonies and Alexander's signature growls and grunts -it seems to lack innovation or musical growth on the part of the band. While Leaves' Eyes doesn't need this growth (I mean, they have a pretty developed sound already), it would have been nice to hear something a little new here. The songs sound just like the band's other music -which isn't exactly a bad thing.
Despite these issues, I can't dislike these songs. They're powerful, great to listen to -and exactly what I expect from Leaves' Eyes.

Kill Hannah Wake Up the Sleepers mp3
I have had faith in kill hannah since I first saw the video Lips Like Morphine. I normally don't buy full cd's because I usually only enjoy one or two songs at most. I decided to take a chance on Until There's Nothing Left of Us and was blown away. Played the record over and over. Weeks later I saw them in concert and realized they bring the energy whether it's live or on the record.
After I found out about there being previous material, I had to find it. For Never And Ever was just as good as UTNLS. I had really big expectations for the record and boy did they deliver. I was not disappointed. From start to finish this CD is without a doubt the best Record Kill Hannah has ever put out and I swear is going to change the way we view life as we know it. So what are you waiting for??? Wake UP and BUY!!! You won't regret it

Like many of his musical heroes, Hoge has emerged stronger, refocused and more dedicated to his craft. The first single, "Even If It Breaks Your Heart," is a personal testament to the power of great American rock and roll.

Austrian Death Machine Double Brutal mp3
In July of 2008, Tim Lambesis of As I Lay Dying fame released a side project under the name "Austrian Death Machine." The CD was brilliant in every respect, capturing the anger and brutality of the Governator's movies. Today, the sequel, Double Brutal, has been officially dropped on us. I pre-ordered the album from the official website and received my pre-order package in the mail yesterday afternoon.
All the haste and glitz doesn't save the album from falling a little flat in two areas. First, I noticed there's a new fake Ahhnold on the album. Even though he does sound quite beefy and realistically older, I liked the comedic impersonation from the first album way better.
I also wasn't too fond on the band's reliance on break-downs during their songs. It sounded to me like each break-down sounded exactly the same as the one before, but at a slower tempo. However, I like how Lambesis lowered his dependence on ProTools to get the job done. Here, it sounds like he was able to manage getting the whole band together. If it was done with ProTools, I could never tell.
Now, the songs themselves... None of the songs are as thrashy as, say, Get To The Choppa. BUT, the humor and brilliance in the songwriting extends to this album. The songs are great, my personal favorite is still "I Need Your Clothes, Your Boots, and Your Motorcycle."
Of course, disc two features a bunch of Ahhnold-inspired covers. Out of all of these tracks, I was the most impressed with Trapped Under Ice and Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good. Hell Bent For Leather is great, except for the fact it's the exact same song as the Christmas EP without the intro part.
I recommend this album to anyone who's a big Arnie fan, fans of ADM, or fans of BROO-TALL music in general. Great album overall.

Gustavo Cerati Fuerza Natural mp3

Living Colour The Chair in the Doorway mp3
Six years after the good but poorly produced Collideoscope, Living Colour is back with an exceptional release. The Chair in the Doorway is by far the best album I've heard this year. It is also the band's best release since Time's Up. In a way, it could their most cohesive work, as every song seems to speak to the others.
Every song is a killer but the albums works even better as whole: it is more than the sum of its parts. The sound is heavy as usual (Decadance and Out of my Mind are particularly agressive), but there is room for melody and groove.
One of Living Colour's main virtues is their ability to combine musicianship and experimentation with a strong pop sensibility. That balance is very present in this album, especially in songs like Burned Bridges, That's what you taught me and first single Behind the Sun, which features one of Vernon Reid's most mesmerizing riffs (a tapped arpeggio that will drive guitar players nuts).
The arrangements are complex and intrincate, it takes several listens to get all the details. The exception is Bless Those, a delicious mix of blues, rock and funk that features simply the band playing live in the studio (with Vernon playing some mean slide guitar). The band is incredibly inspired in this album, especially Corey Glover, who gives us a handful of mesmerizing performances. This is the album all Living Colour fans have been waiting.

Big Star Keep An Eye On The Sky mp3
Simply a great set, beautifully packaged with informative notes and stories, and sounds fantastic. Finally, a more of less complete set from this terribly underrated band.
To the customer above who was underwhelmed by the set, they are missing the point. The superior sound quality ALONE makes the set a worthwhile addition to your music collection. And the ephemera in the book and package make this one a delight.
"Keep An Eye On The Sky" collects all of the best of Big Star, plus a more than generous helping of the demos and alternate mixes that give yet another view of something most music fans know little about. The final disc contains a distillation of the 3 sets Big Star performed in Memphis for a rock writer's convention...long-rumored to have been recorded.
Of particular interest is the selection of Alex Chilton solo demos for all three released Big Star records. Chilton's voice is in fine form here, and could've conceivably been released in this form originally!
As for the packaging, the slipcover closely resembles a 1/4" tape box, and the photos inside the beautifully-designed book have been largely unseen. Great photography by Bill Eggleston abounds, as well as shots from original Big Star producer and Ardent owner John Fry make this set a priceless document for even the casual Big Star fan.
Rhino's done it again. Great, great work on a body of work that still moves musicians and fans 35 years after it was recorded. And another example of the stunning rock'n'roll that continues to emanate from Memphis, Tennessee.

Vertical Horizon Burning the Days mp3
This whole CD is worth it for that song alone, Even Now. Vertical Horizon has been around for so long, yet they had undergone many changes throughout their record history. They moved around record labels, went on hiatus, and re-released their 2003 album, "Go." Finally, after much waiting, Vertical Horizon delivers their new catalog of music, and I have to say...this was worth the wait.
Of course knowing me, I'm a Vertical Horizon nut, so let's cut down to what most everyone else knows about them. I'm sure everyone here remembers their hit song, "Everything You Want" well, closing off with a song like "Even Now" I feel like they've matured in their music very much.
Neil Peart from Rush plays the drums on "Save Me From Myself" "Welcome To The Bottom" and "Even Now." Matt and Neil are actually good friends with one another; they also collaborated on the writing of Even Now. I feel it's too soon to be writing a review without letting the music really sink in as I usually do, but really there are a lot of good songs to pick up on here.
The opening "All Is Said And Done" is a nice start for their return; the very sound of it gives hint to me that they are very much still alive and around. It feels great. Then their next song, The Lucky One once again reassures their return with a great piano medley and a wonderful chorus. It's a little hard to comment on just how everyone is going to take this seeing as it just came out, but if anyone is a fan of Vertical Horizon or simply likes their previous work, I'm sure you'll enjoy this.

Thousand Foot Krutch Welcome To The Masquerade mp3
Oh my gosh, this album is so amazing!!! I have always been a huge TFK fan, and had great expectations for this album, knowing their track record. My expectations were met and exceeded. TFK does a great job on this album of having just the right mix of hard rockers and slower ballads, and the slower songs are just as great as the rockers. Look Away definitely pulls at your heart, and Already Home is a phenomenal closer to the album.
There is also Watching Over Me, which is a great song with very comforting lyrics about how God is always there watching out for us. Fire it Up does just what the title suggests. It fires you up. I love it!!! And other songs like Welcome to the Masquerade, E for Extinction, The Part that Hurts the Most (Is me), Scream, Outta Control, Smackdown, Bring Me to Life all rock to the extreme.
Then there is Forward Motion, which is different from the rest of the album in that it is more of a pop song than a rock song, but they did a great job with it and I love it. Even the little intro at the beginning, The Invitation, is awesome because it does a wonderful job of preparing you for a truly phenomenal album. There is not a song on this album that I want to skip. This is definitely one of, if not TFK's best. Get it and hear for yourself.

Noisettes Wild Young Hearts mp3
The lead female vocalist has a unique, very-rare sound. Her music is free flowing and almost sounds vintage. She is very similar in looks and style as Janelle Monae. When a reviewer of her album listens to the music and watches her music videos, they get a taste of what she wants to put out there to the world.
Strictly listening to her album may make a listener think, 'what is she talking about.' Her music video for Never Forget You is briliant. She has fun with words and finds a way to play them without being mainstream. Her greatest on here Don't Upset the Rhythm (Go Baby Go) and Saturday Night. There is only one "3 star" song. The rest are four and above. Her talent is unique which gives her 5 stars in my book.

Zero 7 Yeah Ghost mp3 download
I am a huge Zero 7 fan...as confirmed by my NC license plate. If I were forced to rank Zero 7's four albums in order of perfection, ironically the list would mirror the date order of album release. Call it my bias...my preference, but 'Simple Things' and 'When It Falls' were absolutely intoxicating.
Don't get me wrong....'Yeah Ghost' is still better than 95% of music being released today, and I anticipated it's release like my next-born-child...and it doesn't disappoint. 'Yeah Ghost' is a great upbeat record, but true Zero 7 fans will know what I mean when I say....Please 'return to your roots' guys....we are aging WITH you....and we miss you!! Call it cliche', say "you can't go home again"....but for the sake of human kind....please "Give It Away"....and return to Simple Things. Don't track my rankings...track your album sales.

The Dead Weather Horehound mp3
It's fast, dark, loud. It's part 60s garage, part 70s hard rock, part eerie folk right out of Marcus's "Old Weird America." Add a dash of 80s glam and new orleans jazz, and shine it up with a fuzzy over-saturated sound that could only come from Jack White's magical 8-track.
Alison Mosshart's passionate, angry, caustic singing blends perfectly with Fertita's cutting, overdriving guitar. Oh Alison Mosshart, brutal slayer of our hearts. She's like if Robert Plant and Janis Joplin had a daughter who died and was reincarnated into the dark angel of blues. Mosshart's lyrics are characteristically dark, banshee temper tantrum ballads. Her style is somewhat similar to her previous work with The Kills, but she seems more wild and unhinged with The Dead Weather.
And as other reviewers have noted, even though this is a rock super-group, the sound is entirely new, entirely their own. But a few things are familiar: the raw but pure sound of Jack White's recording process, and his tradition of ending an album with a simple, enigmatic, low-fi folk song.

Levitate Bruce Hornsby And The Noisemakers mp3
Bruce and the Noisemaker's newest disc, Levitate, is a very solid cut that seems to incorporate the adventurism of 2002's "Big Swing Face" with the more mainstream sound of 2005's "Halcyon Days" and continues the band's tradition of strong songwriting. Ever evolving as an artist, Hornsby's albums all have a distinct sound from the preceeding one, and even between album songs themselves.
(This attribute may alienate some fans of radio tracks, but it keeps Bruce and the band relevant to the world, and treasured by fans craving music inspired by the ear rather than the focus group, and makes each live show an unforgettable, near religious experience.)
"Levitate" is no different. Bruce's signature lyrics that span between cringing and inspirational. 'Prarie Dog Town' is the most catchy song on the disc, but 'Black rats'. 'Cyclone', 'Continents Drift', 'Here we go again' will have you wearing out the repeat button on your player. Most importantly, the entire disc just seems to work as a whole album if you listen to it a few times. In these days of a la carte song marketing, this is a rare feat.
